Eligibility:
Citizens of Canada, people who live there permanently, and people from other countries can apply, as long as they meet the following conditions:
- Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships can only be held at a Canadian school by people who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
- The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship can only be held at a Canadian school by people who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who got their Ph.D., PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree from a foreign university.
- Applicants who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who got their Ph.D., PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree from a Canadian university can take their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at either a Canadian institution or an institution outside of Canada.

To apply for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships in Canada in 2023, you will need to send the following:
- Research proposal: A detailed plan for your research that makes clear your goals, methods, and predicted results.
- Curriculum vitae (CV): A detailed CV with information about your education, study experience, publications, and awards.
- Reference letters: Three letters of recommendation from well-known experts in your area of research who can judge your research potential and academic excellence.
- Letter of support from an institution: A letter of support from the institution where you’ll be doing your study.
- Transcripts: The official records of all degrees earned up to this point.
- Knowledge of a language: If English or French is not your first language, you must show that you know how to speak it well.
- Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) statement: A statement about how you have worked to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in your classroom and professional life.
- The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program’s guidelines and instructions must be followed to the letter. All of the necessary documents must be sent in. Applications that aren’t complete or are sent in too late won’t be considered for the grant.
Eligibility window for degree completion:
For the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program for 2023–24, applicants must have or have met all of the following requirements for a Ph.D., PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree:
between September 15, 2020, and September 30, 2024 (including both dates), and before their award starts.
Applicants who haven’t done everything they need to do to get their degree at the time they apply must show proof by October 15, 2024.
For candidates who have more than one Ph.D., PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree, the eligibility window is based on the most recent degree.
Funding:
The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are valued at $70,000 (taxable) per year. There are no additional funds provided for travel/research.
